In the United States there are people that come from all around the world, and those people are classified into two different groups: legal and illegal. To be considered legal in the United States the person has either acquired a visa, a green card or citizenship. There is then the term illegal, which means that a person has come into the U.S illegally or has entered legally and over stayed their visa. I recently came to know that my best friend Wendoline and her parents are technically illegal. They came into the U.S. illegally from Mexico. 10 Best Practices to Make Your Sunday School Grow Essay Thursday April 29,2004Introduction to Christian EducationMidterm PaperIn the Book 10 Best Practices to make Your Sunday School Grow the Authors, Ken Hemphill and Bill Taylor Offer Ten Examples of tried methods of Growing a Working Sunday School. I wish to take an opposing viewpoint and offer to you three reasons why one of these best practices has not worked in my past experience. I play the devils advocate here. I do hope there is little dislike of me afterward. In Chapter 2 the Authors head their Second Practice as Organize with Purpose. I will offer now three reasons why the content of this chapter not only does not work in all situations, but rather, fails in most. I have been in the Church of the Nazarene for 27 years that I can remember. (There have actually been 31, but youll forgive my lack of memory prior to age 4.) My Father was, at the time, an Ordained Elder in the Church of the Nazarene on the New England District as an assistant Pastor at the Hopedale Church of the Nazarene under Rev. John Newell. They began the arduous task of rebuilding a congregation whose attendance had fallen to the brink of non-existence. There they instituted all of the freshly learned theological training given them by the excellent educators at Eastern Nazarene College. Including newer concepts at the time of how to build and grow a Sunday School. To the best of my recollection the Ordering of the classes here was completely ineffectual. There were too few interested people, too few classrooms, and too few workers. The Sunday School was my sister and myself. There were no adults who wanted to be involved in Sunday School as students. Here lies my first argume nt with our distinguished Authors. Their plan may work in a functioning but diminishing Sunday School that simply needs new life, but in a situation as described above, it becomes a fruitless endeavor. The Harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few is a truth, but there can be no harvesters if there is no harvest to bring in. As I grew older and began to realize there was a call on my own life, and I began to rebel against Gods Plans for me I fought against the constraints of an ordered Sunday School. Here I was in High School, Trying to find myself in this world and in God and was placed in Classes with others my age who were not of the same ilk as I. (i.e. a Pastors Kid.) We clashed. Bitterly. The others did not possess any sort of Education in the Church, and those that did were newly educated, and had only a partial view of a very big Picture. As if viewed through a pinhole in a shoebox. Here lies my second disagreement with the goodly gentlemen Authors. A structured Sunday School does no good if those being structured shouldnt be housed within the same framework as others. It is on the level of putting High School Seniors in classes with 6th Graders. The younger students have the basic grasp of what they are going to need to continue their education, but do not possess the additional information need ed to finish the tasks set before them in a proper manner. Mathematic Principles are necessary to perform complicated Calculus functions, but simply having the basic principles in hand does not make them able to perform the Calculus. On the contrary, this seems to bring about greater confusion and inability to perform them. Now that I have finally stopped running from the Lords call on my life and have accepted the new direction He has pointed me in, I find myself in a situation much more in tune with what Mr. Hemphill and Mr. Taylor are trying to get across. I attend The Church of the Nazarene where I am a Member and a Locally licensed Minister. There the Sunday School has indeed shrunk, but it has also grown. Please, allow me to explain. Though the numbers of attendees has dropped, the number of classes has increased as people of the same learning and not just age are in classes with their peers. This however has led to one other difficulty that is foreseen, but not duly addressed in this book. We now have a class of know-it-alls who have been in the church since the suns light first shone on the Earth, and a class of empty vessels that we are filling to the best of our ability to be the next leaders. The know-it-alls are the problem. They range in age from late teenage to early seventies and they are just happy as clams to possess what they already possess and dont want to possess anymore. Now that these folks have been properly arranged, where do we get the leaders for the know-it-alls. They already know it all. At least they do if you ask them and theyll tell you they do. Our greatest teacher in the Church is already committed to another class and well gifted for that class. The flaw here is that the organization happened without the training. But, the government wanted Ender. They wanted the death threatening genes that Peter had and the merciful and loving genes that Valentine had. They hoped that Ender would make the perfect military commander. So, The government had Ender born and they put a monitor on the back of his neck to watch his every move to see if he ha d what it took to get into Battle School. The monitor protected Ender from Peter and kids at school because if anything got out of hand the officers would stop it to help Ender. They took the monitor off. Peter and the kids at school could finally get to bully Ender without getting caught. Peter quickly took advantage of the monitor being off to bully Ender around. If it weren’t for his loving sister, Valentine, Peter would have killed Ender. The kids at school had formed at gang to jump Ender after school one day. The leader was a boy named Stilson. They were a little bigger than Ender was and they out-numbered him too. Ender knew they were gonna hurt him and keep hurting him for the rest of the school year, so Ender decided to make this the first and last fight. Ender won the fight by ruthless blows to Stilson when he was down. Afterwards Ender cried for what he had done because he didn’t like hurting people, he didn’t like being Peter. Colonel Graff came back to get Ender. It had turned out they wanted to see how Ender could handle himself without the monitor and he had done it perfectly. Colonel Graff took Ender to Battle School. Graff had isolated him from the other boys in his launch group by stating that Ender was the best of them, so Ender had no choice but to be the best in the group to make them like him. There is a great deal of controversy over whether or not The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain should be taught in schools. It has been argued that Mark Twain depicts Jim as Huck’s impotent and submissive sidekick. Another argument made is that Jim isn’t portrayed as much of an actual human being nor is he treated like one throughout the novel. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught in schools so that students and teachers are able to think about and discuss their opinions on what Mark Twain’s purpose was in depicting Jim the way he does.Many critics claim that Mark Twain saw Jim as no more than some type of loyal sidekick who was depicted as a simple-minded character who showed few humanistic characteristics throughout the book. This is not the case, Mark Twain had a purpose in creating a character like Jim, to reinforce yet challenge stereotypical racism back in that time period. Mark Twain did in fact make Jim a simple-minded character lacking intellectual abilities but he also humanized Jim by giving him traits like feelings and also by giving him somewhat of a paternal role to Huck. These two quotes from the beginning and end of the novel show that Jim had no real intellectual growth throughout the novel. Mark Twain continues to have Jim speak in poor (poorer than the the other characters) English to reinforce the stereotypical racism of uneducated African Americans in the South.However, Mark Twain also gives Jim somewhat of a paternal role towards Huck which makes Jim out to be more humane. â€Å"Come in Huck, but doan’ look at his face – it’s to gashly. I didn’t look at him at all. Jim throwed some old rags over him†¦ † (50). This passage fro m the book shows the paternal instinct Twain gave to Jim’s character in which he undermines racist stereotypes like Tom Sawyer’s Aunt Sally who claims that black slaves were not people (221). â€Å"My heart wuz mos’ broke bekase you was los’, en I didn’ k’yer no’ mo’ what become er me en de raf’†¦..It was fifteen minutes before I could go and humble myself to a nigger, but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it, neither. I didn’t do him no more mean tricks and I wouldn’t done that one if I’d ‘a’ known it would make him feel that way† (86). In this passage Mark Twain allows Jim to voice his emotions and by doing so Jim is able to not only make Huck listen but think about the way he treated Jim. Mark Twain not only breaks racist stereotypes through Jim in this passage but breaks them through Huck.Huck acknowledges that Jim is capable of having feelings and allows his own mood to be influenced by the fact that he hurt Jim’s feelings by doing so Huck has made himself â€Å"equal† to Jim thus giving another example of humanizing Jim. â€Å"Said the witches bewitched him and put him in a trance, and rode him all over the State, and then set him under the trees again and huge his hat on a limb to show who done it† (6). Jim’s story about the witches shows his childlike, naive way of thinking developed from a life in slavery in which he was sheltered from knowledge.Jim’s lack of gumption allows Twain to fortify the patronizing racist stereotypes that had developed in the South at this time. How Mark Twain depicts Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well as Twain’s reasoning for doing so is a reason in and of itself why Huck Finn should be taught in schools.
